Which shape should I use?
Square suits profile pictures and Instagram posts. 16:9 fits YouTube thumbnails and laptop wallpapers. 4:3 and 3:4 match most phone photos. Passport uses the 35 × 45 mm shape used on Indian forms; resize it afterwards with the Passport Size Photo tool.
Should I crop before compressing?
Yes. Cropping removes pixels you don't need, so the compressed file keeps more detail in the part that matters, like your face or signature.
